Summer is back, so are viruses and bacteria
Summer time is synonymous with vacations where family and friends come together to make happy memories. From barbecues, to late evening hikes, to savouring cool lemonade on hot afternoons and more, there’s a slew of activities one can enjoy during the summer days. However, the dark side of summer is the illnesses that comes with it. Apart from the heat rashes and sun strokes that occurs due to over exposure to the sun, one can also expect to be down with viral and bacterial illnesses. Here’s a list of some of the most common summertime illnesses you need to be aware of-
Food Poisoning
Bacterias love the warm weather and good food just as much as you do. They do not shy away from breeding on the open food stuff, which when ingested can create havoc inside your system. If you are a fan of barbecue, then it pays to stay alert about how long the food stuff has been kept out in the open, and it is always advised to keep any food item covered.
Most mild food poisoning cases are quite harmless and results in diarrhoea. This in itself might not seem harmless, but the fluid loss that occurs must be replenished by consuming a liquid diet. Failure to do so can result in expensive and often dangerous consequences, that just might ruin your summer!
Summer Colds
There’s nothing worse than catching the sniffles during the hot summer months. These colds are caused by the same retroviruses that are responsible for the winter colds. The most common symptoms include fever, headache and sore throat, which sometimes may be accompanied by mouth sores.
The best remedy for these colds is to get plenty of rest. This means putting a pause to your summer activities until the symptoms subside. You can also opt for herbal drinks and other common remedies for winter colds, which can significantly eliminate discomfort.
Skin Rashes
Skin rashes characterised by reddening, dryness and itchiness are quite common among adults and children during the summer days. These rashes are localised and occur in places where sweat accumulates frequently. The rashes tend to worsen if they are frequently irritated by rubbing against clothing or by scratching. The best way of preventing these rashes is by wearing breathable fabrics and to keeping away from heavy lotions and creams.
Water Borne Illnesses
That refreshing swim in cool waters of the nearby creek can actually turn deadly if you aren’t careful! These natural bodies of water are prime breeding grounds for pathogens, which can cause gastrointestinal problems, ear/ eye/ skin infections, respiratory problems and more! If you do feel like a swim it is recommended that you visit well maintained pools where the pH and chlorine levels in the water are maintained at safe levels.
By taking a few precautions you can prevent much of these illnesses from developing in the first place.
Keeping yourself well hydrated this summer is one of the most effective preventive measures for most of these ailments. Investing in good water purifiers for home can give you constant access to clean drinking water, which can help eliminate chances of illnesses playing spoilt sport to your summer vacations!
